From the Scrap Basket

So, we recently moved into a house after living in our motorhome for a year. Upon receiving our household goods, I was shocked and dismayed to see the amount of fabric I not only had in storage, but also had accumulated over the past year. Piles and piles and piles of material. I'll NEVER use it all, not even if I sew 8 hours a day, every day until I reach 93 and a half years of age. Maybe, just possibly, if I live to 93 and three quarters...

I have three distinct categories:

1. yard goods
2. recycled clothing
3. scraps

My plan of action to tame this beast is:

1. pillowcase/laundry bags with the yard goods and
2. these adorable totes and mini totes with the scraps.

You can expect to see lots more of these products in my Etsy shop, http://www.recycledjeans.etsy.com/, in the next few weeks. If not, call 911. It means I've been buried alive under a mountain of cotton.

I know I'm not the only fabric-aholic out there. How big is your stash and what do you plan to do with it? Show us your pics...

Your bags are great and I really like your brown drink cozy. I sympathize with the fabric addiction - mine is paper!

I stopped sewing a few years ago. But I know what you mean. How did I accumulate so much! Every now and then I get the urge. Your totes are a good idea.

Have you heard of Spoonflower?

Ohhhh you so do not want to see pictures of my piles.....I've been trying for YEARS to succeed at organizing what I have and still don't know the secret to that! :) I'm glad that I'm not the only one...

No photos of my stash! I don't want to give anyone a heart attack. Sounds like you have a plan and plenty of years to carry it out.

Love that lunch bag of yours...

seriously I haven't even found all of it from the move.. It is scary to think how much I have but I know that it was a pain to move and now I must unpack it all and resort...lol. If I had to guess I have approx. 30 + yards of assorted farbic and scraps... I am a bit of a pack rat and refuse to get rid of even the tiniest scrap piece =)

How big is my stash--mmmmm--I really don't know--somewhere in the hundreds of yards. Here's my craft closet when I was cleaning it out in June--the pile on the floor is back with a vengeance, and I can't keep the doors shut--suppose I need to get it all re-organized. Shelves still look great, though! http://monsterbugblankets.blogspot.com/2008/06/my-project-today.html
The top shelf is all 1/4 yards-1 yards, the shelves below are all 2+ yards. The floor is all 10+ yards. And the tippy-top shelf (not shown) holds my fabrics for personal use--a mish-mash of fabrics from when I was a kid, from my kiddos' quilts/blankets, and stuff to sew for family.

Hmm, I never thought about how long it would take me to sew ALL that fabric. Mostly I'm happy to look at and touch it all! Cutting it makes me so sad! Kinda weird, but thankfully there are others out there like me--I've actually met them! :)

Thanks to everyone who shared. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one swimming in fabric. Janvangogh, I kinda wish you hadn't told me about Spoonflower. I checked it out and I am intrigued.

And MonsterBug, I know what you mean about cutting. Sometimes I use up a piece and I think, "Oh my gosh, I better run out and get some more of that." It's a disease, I know...

Ditto ditto ditto.
I have boxes and boxes in storage and in my apartment. Some were bought for dreams of projects that never happened, some were bought because they were so darned cool looking, some were a really great price and I figured I could do something fun with them, others are in the "I'll think of something to do with it" category.

Check out my Adventures of Pam & Frank blog to see what I did with one bit of scrap. This saved some high-water pants from being given away to the thrift store and now I love to wear them.

Meanwhile, I still have a ton of fabric to do something with...
